indicates that it is among the gravest of the forbidden acts. And if this is the punishment for the one who visits a soothsayer, then what will the soothsayer’s own punishment be! We seek refuge in Allah from that and ask Him for well-being.
Relevance of the ḥadīth to the chapter: it contains a clear prohibition against going to soothsayers and the like and believing them, because such belief conflicts with tawḥīd (pure monotheism).
Lessons drawn from the ḥadīth:
- It is forbidden to go to soothsayers, to ask them about matters of the unseen, and to believe what they say; believing them amounts to disbelief.
- The practice of soothsaying itself is unlawful and counts among the major sins.
Additional note: Whoever goes to soothsayers without believing them will have none of his prayers accepted for forty days, as stated in another ḥadīth; but whoever believes them has disbelieved in what was revealed to Muhammad ﷺ.
