by several layers of emphasis: the prefatory lām used for an oath, the emphatic nūn, the comparison of their imitation to one arrow-feather matching the other, and then an even subtler description of resemblance—so exact that if the earlier nations performed some strange, insignificant act, there would be people in this ummah who would do the very same out of imitation.
Relevance of the ḥadīth to the chapter:
It proves that idolatry will arise within this community, because it existed among the nations before us and there will be members of this ummah who adopt it in following them.
Lessons drawn from the ḥadīth:
- Polytheism will appear in this ummah through blind imitation of the nations that preceded it.
- It is a sign of his prophethood: he foretold the matter before it occurred, and it happened exactly as he said.
- A warning against resembling the unbelievers.
- A warning against the idolatry and other prohibitions that the unbelievers fell into.
