banishment from Allah’s mercy, exposure to His unending wrath, the outward metamorphosis into apes or swine, and the inward corruption produced by obeying Satan and turning away from the revelation of the All-Merciful.
These qualities, O People of the Book—and everyone who imitates you—apply to you, not to us.
Relevance of the verse to the chapter: If there were among the People of the Book those who worshiped the ṭāghūt instead of Allah, then there will likewise be individuals in this community who do the same.
Benefits derived from the verse:
1- The occurrence of shirk in this community, just as it occurred among the Jews and Christians who worshiped the ṭāghūt.
2- The legitimacy of debating the people of falsehood and exposing their flaws when they accuse the people of truth of things that are not in them.
3- Retribution is based on deeds and is of the same kind as the deed.
4- Allah is described as becoming angry and cursing the disobedient.
5- Obedience to Satan is the root cause of associating partners with Allah.
