And His, exalted be He, saying: “Say, ‘Shall I inform you of something worse than that as a recompense with Allah? It is those whom Allah has cursed, upon whom His wrath has fallen, those whom He turned into apes and swine, and those who worship the ṭāghūt’” (al-Māʾidah 5:60).
“Say”: the address is to Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him).
“Shall I inform you”: shall I tell you.
“Of something worse than that”: worse than the reproach you levelled against us in falsehood when you said, “We have never seen anyone more evil than you.”
“As a recompense with Allah”: a punishment that will come from Him on the Day of Resurrection; it is an accusative of specification. The description in fact fits you who possess these traits, not us.
“Whom Allah has cursed”: whom He has banished and driven far from His mercy.
“And upon whom His wrath has fallen”: a wrath after which He will never again be pleased with them.
“Those He turned into apes”: namely, the Sabbath-breaking Jews.
“And swine”: the disbelievers who rejected the Table-spread of Jesus among the Christians. Another view holds that both metamorphoses befell the Sabbath-breakers: the young were changed into apes and the elders into swine.
“And those who worship the ṭāghūt (false deity)”: meaning, those whom He caused to worship Satan, i.e., they obeyed him in what he prompted them to do.
Overall meaning of the verse: Allah tells His Prophet to say to those People of the Book who mock and make sport of your religion, “Shall I inform you who will receive the worst recompense with Allah on the Day of Judgment? It is those who are marked by these attributes—banishment…"
