It is forbidden to illuminate graves, for doing so becomes a pathway that leads to their being worshipped.
-
Exaggeration concerning graves is counted among the major sins.
-
The reason prayer is prohibited at graves is fear of falling into polytheism, not ritual impurity. The Messenger of Allah—peace and blessings be upon him—linked together turning graves into places of worship and lighting them with lamps, and he invoked a curse on both practices. Since the curse on lighting them cannot be due to impurity, the same holds true for the prohibition of praying there.
