Overall meaning of the hadith: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ feared that his community might deal with his grave as the Jews and Christians did with the graves of their prophets—exaggerating in honor of them until they became idols. He therefore beseeched his Lord not to allow his grave to be treated in that way. He ﷺ then pointed out the very cause for which severe anger and a curse befell the Jews and Christians: they went to extremes concerning the graves of the prophets until those graves became objects of worship, and thus they fell into the grave form of polytheism that contradicts pure monotheism.
Relevance of the hadith to the chapter: Excessive veneration of graves turns them into idols that are worshipped. This is evident from the Prophet’s ﷺ supplication, “O Allah, do not make my grave an idol to be worshipped,” and from his statement, “They turned the graves of their prophets into places of worship.”
Benefits derived from the hadith:
1- Excessive veneration of the prophets’ graves turns them into idols that are worshipped.
2- Among the manifestations of such excess is making graves into mosques, a practice that leads to polytheism.
3- Affirmation that Allah, exalted is He, possesses the attribute of anger in a manner befitting His majesty.
