And His words, exalted is He:
“Or, who is it that answers the one in desperate need when he calls upon Him, removes the harm, and appoints you as successors on the earth? Is there any deity alongside Allah? How little you reflect.” ⦗al-Naml, 27:62⦘
– Amman (amman): that is, “who is it?”
– Al-muḍṭarr: the afflicted person whom hardship has struck.
– Khalafāʾ al-arḍ: a genitive construction meaning “upon,” i.e., every generation succeeds the one before it on the earth.
– A-ilāh maʿa Allah: that is, “Is there any god besides Allah who performs these acts for you and grants you these favors?”
– Qalīlan mā tadhakkarūn: you remember Allah’s greatness and His blessings only seldom; that is why you have associated others with Him in worship.
Overall meaning of the verse:
Allah, Exalted be He, argues against the polytheists for having taken intercessors besides Him. They themselves acknowledge that when calamity befalls them and they implore Him in earnest, He alone answers, lifts the distress, and allows them to succeed the dead upon the earth. Since their so-called deities do none of these things, how can they be worshipped alongside Allah? Yet the polytheists remember Allah’s favors only briefly, a remembrance too feeble to engender reverence; hence they fell into idolatry.
Relevance of the verse to the chapter:
The verse nullifies seeking relief from anyone other than Allah, for none besides Him answers the distressed, removes affliction, gives life, or causes death.
