And His statement:
“If Allah should touch you with adversity, none can remove it except Him; and if He intends good for you, none can repel His bounty. He causes it to reach whom He wills among His servants, and He is the All-Forgiving, the Ever-Merciful.” (Yunus 10:107)
And if He touches you: that is, if He afflicts you.
with harm: poverty, illness, or any other form of hardship.
no remover: no one can lift it.
no repeller: no one can fend it off.
Overall meaning of the verse: The Almighty announces that He alone possesses sovereignty, compulsion, giving, withholding, harm, and benefit. Consequently, He must be the only One invoked and worshipped, for those besides Him cannot secure harm or benefit even for themselves, let alone for others.
Relevance of the verse to this chapter: It shows that Allah alone deserves acts of worship such as supplication, and that calling upon anyone else is shirk because they can neither benefit nor harm.
Points derived from the verse:
- The obligation to single out Allah in tawḥīd al-ulūhiyyah (worship) because He is unique in tawḥīd al-rubūbiyyah (lordship).
- The invalidity of supplicating anyone besides Allah, for such beings are powerless to confer benefit or avert harm.
- Affirmation of Allah’s will.
- Affirmation, in a manner befitting His majesty, of Allah’s attributes of forgiveness and mercy.
