from preparing nabidh (fermented drink) in specific containers; so drink from whatever vessels you like, but do not drink anything intoxicating.” (1)
Wisdom behind abrogation:
Abrogation serves multiple purposes, among them:
1 – Safeguarding people’s welfare by legislating what is most beneficial for them in both their religious and worldly affairs.
2 – Allowing the law to develop progressively until it attains perfection.
3 – Testing those who are accountable to see whether they are willing to move from one ruling to another and are content with the change.
4 – Testing them regarding their duty of gratitude when the abrogation makes matters lighter, and their duty of patience when it makes matters more demanding.
(1) Reported in Ahmad’s Musnad, 3:237 – no. 13512, and in the Musnad of Abu Ya‘la, 6:373 – no. 3707. In Majmaʿ al-zawaʾid, 5:66, al-Haythami points out that the chain includes Yahya b. ʿAbd Allah al-Jabir, judged weak by most critics, although Ahmad said “there is no harm in him”; the other transmitters are reliable.
