it was abrogated by the verse that comes immediately after it: “Now Allah has lightened your burden, and He knows that there is weakness in you; so if there are a hundred steadfast among you, they will overcome two hundred.” ⦗Q 8:66⦘.

  1. Rulings whose benefit endures in every time and place—such as monotheism, the fundamentals of faith and worship, and the noble qualities of character: truthfulness, chastity, generosity, courage, and the like—can never be abrogated. In the same way, the prohibition of whatever is reprehensible in every age and environment—idolatry, disbelief, and base traits such as lying, debauchery, miserliness, cowardice, and so forth—can never be revoked, for all the revealed laws exist to secure people’s interests and to ward off harm.

Conditions for abrogation
Where abrogation is possible, several conditions must be satisfied:

  1. It must be impossible to reconcile the two evidences; if reconciliation is possible, then both can be acted upon and there is no abrogation.
  2. Certainty that the abrogating text came later. This can be known by an explicit statement, by a Companion’s report, or through historical evidence.
    • Example of what is known to be later by explicit statement: the Prophet ﷺ said, “I had permitted you to seek pleasure with women, but Allah has now forbidden that until the Day of Resurrection.” (1)
    • Example of what is known through a Companion’s report: ʿĀʾishah (may Allah be pleased with her) said, “Among what was revealed in the Quran were ten specified sucklings that made marriage unlawful, then…"
