of his concise statement, “When you see any part of it, then pray.” (1)
An illustration of clarification by both word and deed together is his explanation of how to perform the prayer. He clarified it verbally, as in the ḥadith of the man who prayed badly, where he, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “When you rise for prayer, perfect your wuḍūʾ (ablution), then face the qiblah and pronounce the takbīr (saying Allahu Akbar)…,” the ḥadith. (2)
He clarified it through action as well, as in the report of Sahl ibn Saʿd al-Sāʿidī—may Allah be pleased with him—who related that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, ascended the pulpit, pronounced the takbīr, and the people behind him did likewise while he remained on the pulpit… In that narration he then turned toward the people and said, “I only did this so that you may follow my example and learn my prayer.” (3)
