al-Usul min Ilm al-UsulIbn al-'Uthaymin

—a crowd milling around a man who was being shaded. He asked, “What is this?” They answered, “He is fasting.” He then said, “It is not an act of piety to fast while traveling.” Thus, the scope of this statement is confined to people whose situation resembles that man’s—namely, anyone for whom fasting while on a journey is burdensome. The proof for limiting it in this way is that the Prophet ﷺ himself would fast while traveling (1) whenever it did not cause him hardship, and he ﷺ would never do anything that was not an act of piety.

(1) See: Sahih al-Bukhari, no. 1945, Book of Fasting, chap. 35; and Sahih Muslim, no. 1122, Book of Fasting, chap. 17, “The option of fasting or breaking the fast while travelling.”
