Al-Ṣanʿānī said: The scholars are unanimously agreed that it is lawful to combine the intention of pilgrimage with that of trade and to pursue both aims at once. Concerning this Allah Most High reveals, “There is no blame on you if you seek bounty from your Lord” (Q 2:198). He further cited a verse that is even more explicit: “Among people are those who say, ‘Our Lord, grant us good in this world and good in the Hereafter’ ” (Q 2:201). He clarified that if a person’s motive in seeking such good is merely to win people’s praise, the act becomes blameworthy—unless the deed was originally undertaken for Allah alone and only afterwards does he wish to be commended. Between the two possible understandings, he considered the stronger view to be that in this case there is no harm and no sin.
Hadith Nineteen
On the authority of Abū Mūsā (ʿAbd Allah ibn Qays), from the Prophet ﷺ who said: “Whoever turns his weapons against us is not of us.”
General meaning
The Prophet ﷺ explains that the believers are brothers: they grieve for one another’s sorrows, rejoice in one another’s joys, and stand united as a single hand against anyone who opposes them. Therefore they are obliged to come together, obey their leader, and assist him against anyone who rebels and rises up against him, for such a rebel has shattered the unity of the Muslims, brandished arms against them, and struck fear into their hearts. He must be fought until he returns and submits to Allah’s command, for the one who rebels against them harbors neither human compassion nor Islamic love toward them. Being outside their path, he is “not of them,” and must be fought and disciplined.
Lessons derived from the hadith
1 – It is forbidden to revolt against the imams, meaning the rulers, even if they commit some acts of disobedience so long as those acts do not reach the level of unbelief. The bloodshed, killing of innocents, intimidation of Muslims, loss of security, and disruption of order that follow from rebellion are graver evils than the harm of leaving such rulers in place.
2 – If rebellion is prohibited when the rulers commit certain wrongs, how much more so when they are upright and just.
3 – It is forbidden to terrorize Muslims by brandishing weapons—or by any other means—even in jest.
Hadith Twenty
On the authority of Abū Mūsā who said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was asked about a man who fights out of bravery, one who fights out of tribal zeal, and one who fights to be seen by others. Which of these is fighting in the path of Allah?
