Hadith Five
Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “No one is wounded in the path of Allah without appearing on the Day of Resurrection with his wound still bleeding; its color will be that of blood, yet its fragrance will be the fragrance of musk.”

Gharīb (unfamiliar terms)
maklūm: with an open mīm and a still kāf, the passive participle of kalama (to wound); al-kalm means “a wound.” Hence maklūm means “one who has been wounded.”

Overall Meaning
The Prophet ﷺ points out the merit of jihad in Allah’s cause and the handsome reward awaiting its people. Whoever is injured while striving for Allah—whether he is eventually killed or recovers—will stand before all creation on the Day of Judgment bearing the insignia of jihad and sacrifice: his wound will be fresh, retaining the hue of blood while exuding the fragrance of pure musk. Thus Allah replaces the pain inflicted by the enemy with the honor of pride and glory before the first and the last of mankind. In exchange for the spilling of his blood, Allah substitutes the sweetest scent, its perfume spreading far and wide. Allah is the Possessor of immense bounty.

Lessons Drawn from the Hadith

  1. The excellence of jihad, whose virtues are many and whose rewards are diverse, for through it Islam is strengthened.
  2. The virtue of martyrdom in Allah’s path and the recompense granted to its holder; likewise the virtue of being wounded for His cause, since a wound is a trace of obedience and of striving against His enemies.
  3. The special honor and distinction enjoyed by the wounded on the Day of Resurrection.

Hadith Seven
Anas ibn Mālik (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “A morning march in the path of Allah—or an evening one—is better than the whole world and everything in it.”
