Fifth: every one of the earlier prophets was sent only to his own people. Yet Allah—exalted be He—placed within this mighty Prophet and his exalted message the inherent soundness and universality required to serve as the everlasting constitution and enduring law for all humankind, whatever their races, classes, or far-flung regions. It is therefore the law suited to every time and place; and because it is endowed with such perfection and loftiness, it is the final revelation—needing no addition and admitting no deficiency. It was made all-encompassing, for it contains the very elements of permanence and immortality.
Points derived from the ḥadith:
This is a tremendous report replete with countless benefits; we shall confine ourselves to the most salient:
- The superiority of our Prophet ﷺ over all other prophets, and the superiority of his nation over all other nations.
- Enumerating Allah’s favors upon a servant and mentioning them in gratitude counts as an act of worship and thanksgiving to Allah.
- Among his distinctive merits ﷺ are that he was aided by awe, booty was made lawful for him, he was sent to all people, he was granted intercession, and the earth was made for him and his community a place of worship and a means of purification. His distinctive traits have been counted as seventeen, while al-Sanʿānī reports twenty-one; whoever surveys al-Jāmiʿ al-Ṣaghīr and al-Jāmiʿ al-Kabīr will find even more than that…
- The validity of the prayer is not confined to any particular spot.
- The default ruling concerning the earth is that it is pure for both prayer and dry-ablution (tayammum).
- Any soil is suitable for performing tayammum.
- The breadth and grandeur of this law, which was therefore instituted to regulate the entire world—its acts of worship and its transactions—despite the diversity of its lands and the distance between its regions.
- The phrase “any man” is not restricted to males; its intent includes the corresponding women, for women are the counterparts of men.
- Al-Sanʿānī said: The ḥadith specifies a distance of one month, and no more, because none of those who displayed enmity toward him lived farther away than that.
