Lexical note
- “lam tuḥall”: The verb may be read with ḍamma on the initial tāʾ and fatḥ on the ḥāʾ, giving a passive sense; or with fatḥ on the tāʾ and kasra on the ḥāʾ, giving an active sense, the latter being more common, as stated by Shaykh Nūr al-Dīn al-Hāshimī.
Overall meaning
Our Prophet ﷺ was singled out above all the earlier prophets with distinguishing marks of honor and praiseworthy merits that none before him possessed. By the blessing of this noble and fortunate Messenger, a portion of those virtues has reached the Muhammadan community.
Among them are the five noble distinctions mentioned in this ḥadith:
First: Allah, exalted is He, granted him victory and support over his enemies by casting dread into their hearts, weakening their strength, shattering their power, scattering their ranks, and reducing their numbers—even when the Prophet ﷺ was a month’s journey away from them. This is divine aid for His Prophet and utter defeat for the enemies of His religion, an immense assistance from Allah.
Second: Allah, exalted is He, granted ease to this noble Prophet and to his blessed nation by making the entire earth a mosque. Wherever the time of prayer finds them, they may pray, unrestricted to specific places, unlike those before them who could worship only in churches and synagogues. Thus Allah lifted hardship and constraint from this community as a grace and favor. Likewise, earlier nations could be purified only with water, whereas for this nation earth has been made a purifier when water is unavailable, and the same concession applies to one who cannot use water because it would harm him.
Third: The spoils taken from disbelievers in battle are lawful for this Prophet ﷺ and his community; they distribute them as Allah has prescribed. Such goods had been forbidden to earlier prophets and their nations: they would gather the booty, and if it was accepted, a fire would descend from heaven and consume it.
Fourth: Allah—Majestic and Exalted—has singled him out with the Praiseworthy Station and the greatest intercession on the Day when even the messengers of firm resolve will hold back on the Plains of Resurrection. He will say, “I am the one for it,” then he will prostrate beneath the Throne and glorify Allah as He deserves. It will be said, “Intercede—your intercession is granted; ask—you will be given.” He will then seek intercession for all created beings that judgment be passed among them during that long standing. This is the Praiseworthy Station for which all people, first and last, will envy him.
