Lessons drawn from the ḥadīth:
- When a female slave is set free while married to a male slave, she is given the choice either to stay with him or to dissolve the marriage, and the permissibility of that is affirmed by the consensus of the scholars. If, however, she is emancipated while married to a free man, she has no such option according to the majority of jurists, including the imams Mālik, al-Shāfiʿī, and Aḥmad.
- The narration shows that parity (kafāʾah) in lineage between the spouses is taken into account and that freedom versus slavery is among the factors that can negate such compatibility.
- If a poor person receives charity and then gives a portion of it as a gift to someone for whom charity is not permissible—whether that recipient is wealthy or otherwise—the gift is valid, for the poor person has become the owner of the charity and may dispose of it as he wishes.
- It provides evidence that the head of the household may inquire of his family about the affairs and conditions of the home.
- Walāʾ (the bond of clientage) is restricted to the emancipator; it cannot belong to anyone else, nor can it ever be transferred away from him.
- Because this bond is regarded as closely attached—indeed, as though it were blood kinship—it establishes the right of the emancipator and his agnatic relatives to inherit from the freed person. That, precisely, is why the ḥadīth is cited here.
