Taysīr al-ʿAllāmAbd Allah al-Bassam

According to this view, all the hadiths on the issue can be harmonised, each one qualifying and clarifying the other.

This opinion was adopted by the author of al-Mughnī, the commentator ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Abī ʿUmar, and Shaykh al-Islām Ibn Taymiyyah—may Allah have mercy on them all.

Summary
In al-Mughnī it is stated:
• Whatever combines volume-measure, weight-measure, and edibility while belonging to a single genus is subject to ribā; this is the sole narrated position. Examples include rice, millet, legumes, and oils. This is also the view held by the majority of scholars, early and late, in all the centres of learning.
• Whatever lacks volume-measure, weight-measure, and edibility and is of a different genus is, by a single report, exempt from ribā. This too is the position of most jurists, such as in the case of figs or date-stones.
• As for that in which only edibility is present, or only volume and weight within one genus, there are two reports. On this point the scholars have differed, and the stronger view—Allah willing—is permissibility, for there is no sound evidence to prohibit it, nor any persuasive rationale. The reports adduced for prohibition are weak and mutually conflicting; they must therefore either be dismissed or reconciled, with the matter reverting to the original presumption of permissibility established by the Qur’an, the Sunnah, and sound reasoning.

Hadith 3
Abū Saʿīd al-Khudrī (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: Bilāl brought the Prophet ﷺ some Barni dates. The Prophet ﷺ asked him, “Where did these come from?” Bilāl replied, “We had some inferior dates, so I sold two ṣāʿs of them for one ṣāʿ of these in order that the Prophet ﷺ might eat from them.” The Prophet ﷺ thereupon said, “Ah! Ah! This is ribā itself, ribā itself. Do not do that. When you want to buy dates, sell the inferior dates for money and then purchase with it.”

Glossary
