While the Prophet ﷺ was sitting with his Companions in the Prophet’s Mosque, a Bedouin arrived and began to urinate in one of the corners, imagining the place to be like the open desert. The Companions considered his act a grave violation of the mosque’s sanctity and reprimanded him while he was still urinating.
Yet the Prophet ﷺ—whose noble character was sent with glad tidings and ease, and who understood the Bedouins’ circumstances—ordered them not to scold him, so that he would not splash impurity over a wider area, suffer physical harm by cutting off his urine, or become unreceptive to advice when the Prophet ﷺ instructed him. He then directed them to purify the spot by pouring a bucket of water over it.
Lessons derived from the hadith:
1 – Urine on the ground is purified by flooding the spot with water; it is not necessary to remove the soil either before or after.
2 – The obligation to honor and cleanse mosques.
3 – The Prophet’s ﷺ gracious forbearance: he guided the Bedouin gently after the latter had finished, prompting the man to exclaim, “O Allah, have mercy on me and Muhammad, and do not have mercy on anyone else,” as recorded in Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī.
4 – His ﷺ far-reaching insight and knowledge of people’s dispositions.
5 – When two harms conflict, the lesser is tolerated; he allowed the man to finish urinating to avert the greater harm of stopping him.
6 – Living far from towns and cities breeds roughness and ignorance.
7 – Gentleness is required when teaching the ignorant.
Clarification of the rulings concerning circumcision, shaving the pubic hair, trimming the mustache, and clipping the nails
Abū Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, “Five practices are part of the fitrah (natural disposition): circumcision, removing the pubic hair, trimming the mustache, clipping the nails, and plucking the armpit hair.”
Overall meaning: Abū Hurayrah reports that he heard the Prophet ﷺ state that five traits belong to the religion of Islam,
