Taysīr al-ʿAllāmAbd Allah al-Bassam

While they were on the road they caught sight of some wild asses and, knowing that Abu Qatadah was not in ihram, each of them inwardly wished that he would notice the animals. When he did see them, he spurred his mount, gave chase, and brought down a jenny. They ate part of its meat, but then began to doubt whether doing so was permissible for them while they were in ihram. Accordingly, they carried what remained of the meat until they reached the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.

They asked him about the matter, and he cross-examined them: “Did any one of you tell him to hunt it, or assist him by pointing it out or signalling?” They replied, “Nothing of the sort happened.” He therefore reassured them that the meat was lawful, ordered them to eat what was left of it, and he ﷺ himself ate from it.

Second Ḥadīth
Al-Saʿb ibn Jathāmah al-Laythī ⦗may Allah be pleased with him⦘ reported that he presented the Prophet ﷺ with a wild ass while the Prophet was at al-Abwāʾ—or, he said, at Waddān—but the Prophet returned it to him. When he noticed the look on al-Saʿb’s face he said, “We only returned it to you because we are in a state of ihram.”
