Chapter: The Excellence of Shaving the Head and the Permissibility of Trimming
First Hadith
ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿUmar (narrated) that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“O Allah, bless those who shave (their heads).”
They said, “And those who trim, O Messenger of Allah?”
He replied, “O Allah, bless those who shave.”
They repeated, “And those who trim, O Messenger of Allah?”
He again said, “O Allah, bless those who shave.”
They persisted, “And those who trim, O Messenger of Allah?”
He then said, “And (bless) those who trim.”
Overall meaning
Shaving the head or trimming it is one of the distinguished rites of Hajj and ʿUmrah. Shaving is superior to trimming because it manifests a deeper level of devotion and humility before Allah by completely removing the hair in obedience to Him. For that reason, the Prophet ﷺ invoked divine mercy for those who shave three times.(1) The companions present kept reminding him of the trimmers, but he initially turned away; on the third—or fourth—request he finally included them, indicating that shaving is preferable for men. The exception is during the ʿUmrah of tamattuʿ, when time is so short that the hair would not regrow before the Hajj shave; in that situation trimming becomes better.
Points derived from the hadith
1 – The legitimacy of either shaving or trimming; the sound view is that one of the two is obligatory for both Hajj and ʿUmrah.
2 – The superiority of shaving over trimming for men is unanimously agreed upon—except in the tamattuʿ scenario just mentioned, when trimming is preferable.
3 – Shaving here means removing all of the head-hair by any means; trimming means cutting the ends to roughly the length of a fingertip.
4 – What is prescribed is to do one or the other, not both.
5 – The preference given to shaving shows that both acts are independent rites of Hajj, not merely permissions to exit the state of consecration; otherwise, neither would have been favored over the other. This is the stronger of the two scholarly opinions and is the position of the majority, including the four Imams.
