Taysīr al-ʿAllāmAbd Allah al-Bassam

As for the ḥadiths that allow bringing a given rite forward when the questioner had actually done so, they are all linked to his words, “I was unaware.” Hence the ruling is confined to that state of ignorance, whereas the deliberate offender remains under the original obligation to follow the Messenger in the rites of ḥajj. End of quotation.

Al-Ṣanʿānī said, “This is a sound position, except that the evidence for obligating a dam (compensatory sacrifice) does not stand.” He also remarked: “Realise that making a dam obligatory for these acts performed—or left undone—during ḥajj is supported by no prophetic text. What is cited is a report from Ibn ʿAbbās, yet it is not authentically established from him that anyone who does one rite before another must offer a dam.” The same view was held by Saʿīd ibn Jubayr, al-Ḥasan, al-Nakhaʿī, and the scholars of opinion. Al-Ṣanʿānī further said, “What is astonishing is that the later jurists unanimously required a dam in numerous cases, relying on Ibn ʿAbbās’s statement—even though that report is not firm.”

Chapter: How Jamrat al-ʿAqabah Is Stoned

First Ḥadith
ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Yazīd al-Nakhaʿī narrated that he performed the pilgrimage with Ibn Masʿūd and saw him stone the largest Jamrah with seven pebbles. He placed the Kaaba to his left and Mina to his right, then said, “This is the station of the one upon whom Sūrah al-Baqarah was revealed, ﷺ.”

Overall Meaning
Stoning the Jamrahs on the Day of Sacrifice and the Days of Tashrīq is a noble act of worship that embodies humility before Allah, obedience to His commands, and imitation of Abraham the Friend. It recalls his remarkable story with his son—an episode of true faith and willing submission—when Satan tried to dissuade him from obeying his Lord, so Abraham pelted him at those very spots with the heart of a believer, the resolve of the steadfast, and the soul of one content with his Lord’s decree. We, too, stone Satan, represented in those positions, to revive that memory and humiliate the devil who strives to turn us away from worshipping our Lord. The first act the pilgrim performs on the Day of Sacrifice is the stoning of the major Jamrah, making it the opening deed of that momentous day.
