Taysīr al-ʿAllāmAbd Allah al-Bassam

and he instructed ʿAlī to oversee the slaughter of the remainder and to give their meat away in charity. Because the animals had been presented for the sake of Allah, he ﷺ did not wish to reclaim anything from them. Therefore he ordered that their meat, hides, and saddle-cloths be distributed in charity. Since they were an offering for the poor and the needy, the one who presented them held no right to dispose of them—or of any part of them—by way of compensation. Thus he forbade giving the butcher anything from them as payment for his work, promising instead to pay his wage from other funds, not from their meat, hides, or saddle-cloths.

Points derived from the ḥadith
1 – The legitimacy of the hady and the fact that the Prophet ﷺ himself practiced it.
2 – It is better that the offering be plentiful and widely beneficial, for the Prophet ﷺ offered one hundred camels.
3 – One should give the animal itself—and what goes with it, such as hides and saddle-cloths—in charity. The donor may eat up to one-third of a voluntary hady or of the hady for tamattuʿ or qirān.
4 – The butcher must not receive any part of it as remuneration; rather, one may give him some of it as charity or as a gift. Ibn Daqīq al-ʿĪd said: “What must be feared here is that people may compromise on the fee because of the meat the butcher receives, so that the transaction becomes, in reality, a form of compensation.” Al-Baghawī said: “If he is paid his full wage and then—should he be poor—he is given some meat in charity, there is no harm.”
5 – It is permissible to appoint someone as an agent to slaughter the animal and distribute it in charity.

Fifth Ḥadith
Ziyād ibn Jubayr reported: I saw Ibn ʿUmar pass by a man who had made his camel kneel down to slaughter it. Ibn ʿUmar said, “Set it upright, with its leg tied; that is the practice of Muhammad ﷺ.”

Overall meaning
The sunnah regarding cattle, sheep, and other livestock—apart from camels—is to slaughter them at the throat while they are laid on their left flank facing the qiblah. As for camels, the sunnah is to pierce them at the base of the neck while they are standing, with the left foreleg bound, for this offers the animal relief by hastening the departure of its life. Hence, when ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿUmar passed by a man who wanted to slaughter a kneeling camel, he said, “Make it stand up…”
