By the unanimous agreement of Muslims who follow the well-attested Sunnah of the Prophet ﷺ, it is established that the Prophet’s chamber is neither to be kissed nor to be rubbed, lest the dwelling of a created being be likened to the House of the Creator. If this ruling applies to the grave of Allah’s Messenger ﷺ, then the graves of others are even more deserving of this caution: they are not to be kissed or touched at all. As for circumambulating any of those places, that is among the gravest of forbidden innovations.
- It is not prescribed to touch for blessing any corner of the Kaʿbah other than the two Yemeni corners, nor any other sacred sites such as the Station of Abraham, Mount of Mercy (Jabal al-Rahmah) at ʿArafah, the Sacred Monument (al-Mashʿar al-Harām) at Muzdalifah, the Prophet’s blessed Rawdah, the Rock in Jerusalem, and similar places.
For Sacred Law is taken from the Lawgiver without addition or excess, and without reduction or neglect.
Whoever invents a form of worship that Allah and His Messenger have not legislated has, in effect, denied Allah’s declaration, “Today I have perfected for you your religion” (al-Māʾidah 5:3), and has presumed to amend the mission of Muhammad ﷺ, who said, “I have left you upon the clear path; its night is as bright as its day.”
We even see some people compromising the obligatory prayer, saying the closing salām with the imam—or even before him—so that they can be the first to kiss the Black Stone. All of this stems from ignorance and from the scarcity of sincere advisers and guides.
Indeed, we have turned to the love of this world—the root of every sin—and have cast Allah’s commands behind our backs. Truly we belong to Allah and to Him we shall return.
