Another note:
Shaykh al-Islam said: “Nothing of the Ḥaram’s trees or other vegetation may be cut, except for idhkhir, and whatever people themselves have planted or sown, for that belongs to them.”
He then added, may Allah have mercy on him: “Visiting the mosques erected in Mecca other than the Sacred Mosque—such as the mosque at al-Ṣafā, the so-called Birthplace Mosque, and the like—is not a Sunnah, nor did any of the leading scholars ever recommend it. What the Law prescribes is coming to the Sacred Mosque alone. The same ruling applies to making a point of visiting the hills and sites surrounding Mecca, like Mount Ḥirāʾ: visiting any of them is not part of the Prophet’s ﷺ practice; rather, it is an innovation.”
A third note:
When ʿAmr ibn Saʿīd, acting on the orders of Yazīd ibn Muʿāwiyah, set out to fight ʿAbd Allāh ibn al-Zubayr, he dispatched an army from Medina under the command of ʿAbd Allāh’s brother, ʿAmr ibn al-Zubayr—between the two brothers there was hostility. The force marched out, but as it drew near Mecca, ʿAbd Allāh ibn al-Zubayr sent two detachments of the troops stationed with him in Mecca. The Umayyad army was routed, ʿAmr ibn al-Zubayr was captured, and his brother imprisoned him and flogged him with whips until he died.
Hadith Two
Narrated by ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿAbbās (may Allah be pleased with them both):
On the day Mecca was conquered the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said,
“There is no emigration after the Conquest, but there remains striving and intention. If you are called to mobilise, then go forth.”
He also declared on that day:
“This city Allah sanctified when He created the heavens and the earth, and it is inviolable by Allah’s decree until the Day of Resurrection. Fighting in it was not lawful for anyone before me, and it has not been made lawful for me except for a single hour of one day—namely, this very hour of mine. It is sacred by Allah’s decree until the Day of Resurrection: its thorns are not to be cut, its game is not to be driven away, no one may pick up its lost property except someone who will announce it, and its fresh herbage is not to be cut.”
Al-ʿAbbās said, “O Messenger of Allah, except for idhkhir, for it is used by their blacksmiths and in their houses.” He replied, “Except for idhkhir.”
Glosses:
• al-qīn: the blacksmith.
• “If you are mobilised, then go forth” (istunfirtum fanfirū): nafara means to set out quickly; that is, if you are urgently summoned to war, leave promptly as ordered.
• “Its thorns are not to be cut” (lā yuʿḍad shawkuhu): al-ʿaḍd means cutting.
• “Its game is not to be driven away” (lā yunaffaru ṣayduhu): do not chase or frighten the animals from their habitat.
