Hadith 3
‘A’ishah — may Allah be pleased with her — reported:
‘Abd al-Rahman ibn Abi Bakr al-Siddiq entered upon the Prophet ﷺ while I was supporting him against my chest. ‘Abd al-Rahman was holding a fresh siwak with which he was cleaning his teeth. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ fixed his gaze upon it, so I took the siwak, bit its tip to soften and perfume it, and then handed it to the Prophet ﷺ. He brushed with it, and I never saw the Messenger of Allah ﷺ clean his teeth more beautifully than on that occasion. No sooner had he finished than the Messenger of Allah ﷺ raised his hand—or his finger—and said, “With the Highest Companion, with the Highest Companion, with the Highest Companion,” and then his soul departed.
She used to say: “He died with his head between my collarbone and my chin.”
In another wording she said: “I noticed him looking at it, and I knew he loved the siwak, so I asked, ‘Shall I bring it to you?’ He nodded yes.”
This is al-Bukhari’s wording, and Muslim records a similar version.
Unfamiliar terms
- “yastannu bihi” – he passes the siwak over his teeth as though tracing them.
- “fa-abaddahu” – with a light bāʾ and a doubled dāl: he extended his gaze toward it and kept looking.
- “between my ḥāqina and dhāqina” – the ḥāqina is the hollow between the collarbones at the base of the neck; the dhāqina is the upper end of the throat.
- “fa-qaḍamtu-hu” – with a fatḥah on the qāf and a kasrah on the ḍād: she chewed it lightly with the tips of her teeth to soften it. “qaḍm” is biting with the edges of the teeth, whereas “khaṣm” is biting with the whole mouth.
Overall meaning
‘A’ishah describes an incident that reveals the Prophet’s ﷺ deep love for the siwak. During his final moments, her brother ‘Abd al-Rahman entered carrying a moist siwak. The Prophet’s ﷺ longing for it was evident, so ‘A’ishah prepared it by cutting off the worn tip, fashioning a new one, cleaning, and perfuming it before placing it in his hand. He brushed with it more perfectly than she had ever seen. When he had finished, he raised his finger, affirmed the oneness of Allah, chose to return to his Lord, and then passed away ﷺ. ‘A’ishah rightly rejoiced that he departed this world while his head rested against her chest.
