3- Worship must be measured and just: do not neglect it, yet do not become excessive in it. Your Lord has a right over you, and your family has a right over you—so give each party its due. Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah said, “The Sacred Law came with justice in all things. Extravagance in worship is an injustice the Lawgiver forbade; He commanded moderation. For that reason He ordered us to hasten the breaking of the fast, to delay taking the pre-dawn meal, and He prohibited continuous fasting. Balance in acts of devotion is among the greatest aims of the sharia. Every prescribed and recommended practice is built upon justice, moderation, and the middle course, which is the best and noblest way.”
4- Allah, exalted is He, has bound you to many different kinds of worship. If you go too far in one type, you will forsake the rest; therefore keep some strength in reserve for the other devotions. Likewise, the everyday duties a person owes—being with his spouse, visiting friends, earning a livelihood, speaking with his children, and sleeping—when undertaken with the intention of reward and of fulfilling rights, these customary actions become worship. Allah’s bounty is vast and His benevolence immense.
Hadith Four
Abu Hurayrah, may Allah be pleased with him, said:
“My close friend advised me concerning three matters: that I fast three days of every month, that I pray two rakʿahs of Duha, and that I perform Witr before I sleep.”
Overall meaning
This noble hadith contains three gracious prophetic counsels:
1- To fast three days of every month. Since every good deed receives a tenfold return, fasting three days is reckoned as fasting the entire month. The preferable dates are the thirteenth, fourteenth, and fifteenth, as mentioned in several reports; assigning the fast to these days also carries medical benefits.
2- To pray the Duha prayer, whose minimum is two rakʿahs, especially for one who does not pray at night—such as Abu Hurayrah, who used to engage in the study of knowledge during the early part of the night. The best time for these rakʿahs is when the forenoon sun becomes hot and the young camels feel the scorching heat (1), as stated in another hadith.
