Visiting Graves:
Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah stated: “Grave visitation is of two kinds: one that is prescribed and one that is innovated.
-
The prescribed visit is undertaken to greet the deceased and supplicate for him, just as praying over his bier. It is authentically reported that the Prophet ﷺ used to teach his Companions, when they visited the graves, to say:
‘Peace be upon you, O inhabitants of these dwellings—believers and Muslims. If Allah wills, we shall certainly join you. May Allah have mercy on those of you who have preceded us and those who will come later. We ask Allah for well-being for us and for you. O Allah, do not deprive us of their reward, do not try us after them, and forgive us and them.’ -
The innovated visit includes setting out for the grave of a prophet or a righteous individual in order to pray there, to supplicate there, to invoke him, to seek one’s needs from him, to seek those needs from Allah specifically at his grave, to call upon him for rescue, and the like. All of this falls under innovations that none of the Companions or their righteous successors ever practiced; indeed, the great Imams of the Muslims expressly forbade it.”
