A second report from Imam Aḥmad states that all three—woman, donkey, and black dog—break the prayer, basing this on the ḥadīth of Abū Dharr just cited.
The view that all three invalidate the prayer was also adopted by Ibn Ḥazm and preferred by Shaykh Taqī al-Dīn, who maintained that this is in fact the position of Imam Aḥmad.
Note
The black dog is singled out, rather than other dogs, because it is a devil, as the ḥadīth explains. Abū Dharr said, “Messenger of Allah, what is it about the black dog in contrast to the red or the yellow one?” He replied, “The black dog is a devil.”
A Comprehensive Section
In this section the author cites various matters relating to the prayer, so I have chosen to place each matter under its own heading to clarify its purpose and point to the intended meaning. For that reason I have brought forward the ḥadīth of Anas about prostrating on a cloth because of intense heat so that it can appear alongside the ḥadīth of Abū Hurayrah—“When the heat becomes severe, postpone the prayer …” —because the two are related, even though the author separated them with two ḥadīths that do not fit the topic.
