Overall meaning
When the Prophet ﷺ pronounced the opening takbīr that inaugurates the prayer, he would lower his voice for a brief moment before reciting al-Fātiḥah. The Companions knew that he uttered something during that brief silence, so Abū Hurayrah said, “May my father and mother be ransomed for you, Messenger of Allah, what do you say in this pause between the takbīr and the recitation?”
He replied, “I say: ‘O Allah, distance me from my sins as You have distanced the East from the West. O Allah, cleanse me of my sins as a white garment is cleansed of dirt. O Allah, wash me of my sins with water, snow, and hail.’”
This supplication is supremely suited to the noble circumstance of intimate dialogue with Allah, for the worshipper turns to his Lord asking Him to erase his sins and to set an unbridgeable gulf between him and them—just as the East and West never meet—to remove his offenses and purify him from them as dirt is removed from a white garment whose cleanliness is immediately apparent, and to wash away his sins and cool their fiery heat with these purifying, cooling agents: water, snow, and hail. The imagery is perfectly appropriate.
Legal rulings derived from the ḥadīth
- It is recommended to open the prayer with a supplication of inauguration (duʿāʾ al-istiftāḥ).
- Its place is after the opening takbīr and before the recitation of al-Fātiḥah in the first rakʿah of every prayer.
- It should be recited quietly, even in prayers that are performed aloud.
- The supplication should not be unduly prolonged, especially in congregational obligatory prayers.
- The Companions—may Allah be pleased with them—were meticulous in observing the Prophet ﷺ in all his movements and stillness.
- When making supplication, one should persist and ask abundantly for what one seeks, even by using synonymous phrases. All of these invocations revolve around erasing sins and distancing the servant from them, and the concepts of water, snow, and hail overlap; the shared aim is to extinguish the heat of sins with these cooling substances.
Two benefits
First: Numerous opening supplications for the prayer have been authentically reported from the Prophet ﷺ, among them the supplication under discussion: “O Allah, distance me from my sins…” and so forth.
