Taysīr al-ʿAllāmAbd Allah al-Bassam

Imam Aḥmad said in his epistle: “There is no prayer for the one who precedes the imam.” The Imam’s disciples add: Whoever overtakes his imam in a pillar—such as bowing or prostration—must return and perform that pillar after the imam. If he deliberately refrains until the imam reaches him in it, his prayer is nullified.

The correct view is the one stated in the epistle: merely anticipating the imam deliberately renders the prayer invalid. This was also the choice of Shaykh al-Islām Ibn Taymiyyah, for a threat indicates prohibition, and prohibition entails invalidity.

Deductions from the ḥadith:

  1. It is unlawful to raise one’s head from prostration before the imam. The threat attached to it proves the prohibition, for a threat is issued only for something forbidden, and the promised metamorphosis is among the severest punishments.
  2. The same censure applies to overtaking the imam in every transition of the prayer. This is not based on analogy alone; in addition to sound analogy, al-Bazzār narrated on the authority of Abū Hurayrah, in a marfūʿ report: “Whoever lowers and raises (his head) before the imam—his forelock is in Satan’s hand.”
  3. The follower is obliged to stay in step with the imam throughout the prayer.
  4. The recompense matches the deed: because the offense involves lifting the head, the threatened punishment involves a deformation of the very head.
  5. The transgressor is threatened with being turned into a donkey, for there is a likeness between him and the donkey in dullness and stupidity. Since he knows he cannot leave the prayer before the imam, his haste brings no benefit and thus exposes his foolishness.
  6. Pre-empting the imam betrays a desire to hurry out of the prayer. Its remedy is for the person to recall that he will not pronounce the closing salām before the imam.
  7. The threat of being transformed into a donkey is entirely possible; it is a type of metamorphosis, though no instance of it has been reported. It may also mean an inner transformation, whereby the person becomes as obtuse as a donkey.
