and “he would teach it to his Companions just as he would teach them a surah from the Qur'an.” (1)
Ibn Jurayj corroborated the report, yet he differed over the Companion’s identity, classifying it as part of the Musnad of Aishah. Imam Ahmad (6/200) records: “ʿAbd al-Razzaq told us; Ibn Jurayj narrated to me, from Ibn Tawus, from his father: that after the tashahhud in the last ʿishaʾ prayer he would say certain phrases which he deemed highly important….” He quoted them with some re-ordering and added: “He held them in great esteem and related them from Aishah, from the Prophet ﷺ.” This chain is sound according to the criteria of the Six. Ibn Hajar (2/253) also attributes it to Ibn Khuzaymah through this route.
(1) The same supplication is likewise transmitted from Ibn ʿAbbas. Malik (1/216–217)—and, via Malik, Muslim (2/94), Abu Dawud (1/241), al-Nasai (2/320), al-Tirmidhi (2/263) and Ahmad (1/242)—all report, through Abu al-Zubayr, from Tawus, from Ibn ʿAbbas, that the Prophet ﷺ would say: “Say: O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the punishment of Hell, from the punishment of the grave, from the trial of the Masih al-Dajjal, and from the trials of life and death.” Al-Tirmidhi commented: “A hasan sahih hadith.” Another chain exists: al-Bukhari in al-Adab al-mufrad (no. 100) and Ibn Majah (2/432) narrate it through Kuraib from Ibn ʿAbbas; in that chain sits Bakr b. Sulaym al-Sawwaf, who is judged maqbul (acceptable) in al-Taqrib.
