Al-Tirmidhi added: “A hasan (sound) hadith.”
I have also found a corroborating report from Ibn Masud, who said:
“I was praying while the Prophet ﷺ was present together with Abu Bakr and Umar. When I sat for the tashahhud I began with praise of Allah, then invoked blessings upon the Prophet, and then supplicated for myself. The Prophet said, ‘Ask and you will be granted; ask and you will be granted.’”
Al-Tirmidhi likewise recorded it (2/488, Halabi ed.) through the chain of Abu Bakr ibn Ayyash → Asim → Zir, from Ibn Masud. This isnad is hasan. Al-Tirmidhi himself graded the report “hasan sahih.”
Its annotator, Qadi Ahmad Muhammad Shakir, commented: “Ibn Majah also narrated it.” I have searched Ibn Majah and did not find it. Al-Nabulsi in al-Dhakhaʾir (2/193) likewise ascribed it to the Kitab al-Sunnah of Ibn Majah, but on examination I did not see it there either. What Ibn Majah does transmit (1/63) with this same chain from Ibn Masud is that Abu Bakr and Umar congratulated him, saying that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ declared: “Whoever wishes to recite the Quran fresh as it was revealed should recite according to the reading of Ibn Umm Abd.”
I later located our hadith in al-Bayhaqi (2/153) by another route from Ibn Masud, in a fuller wording that likewise contains, “Whoever wishes …,” and so forth.
Regarding the phrase “lahu aw lighayrihi” (for himself or for someone else), this is the wording in the versions of Abu Dawud and al-Tahawi, both using the particle aw (“or”), whereas the other narrations
