The Obligation to Invoke Blessings upon the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)
Within this sitting he prescribed invoking blessings upon him, just as he prescribed it in the first tashahhud. The various transmitted formulas for doing so have already been mentioned earlier.
He (peace and blessings be upon him) once heard a man supplicating in his prayer without glorifying Allah the Exalted and without sending blessings upon the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). He said, “This man has been hasty.” He then called the man over and said to him—or to someone else:
“When any one of you prays, let him begin by praising his Lord, the Mighty and Majestic, and extolling Him; then let him send blessings (in another narration: let him send) upon the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), after which he may supplicate for whatever he wishes.”
[The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) also heard a man praying who glorified and praised Allah and invoked blessings upon the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said, “Pray and you will be answered; ask and you will be given.”] (1)
