that he used to see ʿAbd Allah b. ʿUmar sit cross-legged during the prayer whenever he sat, so he imitated him—while still a youth—but ʿAbd Allah forbade him and said such-and-such. He then asked, “But you yourself do that?” ʿAbd Allah replied, “My legs can no longer support me.”
Al-Tahawi (1/151) and al-Bayhaqi (2/129) transmit the same report. Al-Nasaʾi (1/173), al-Daraqutni (133) and, again, al-Bayhaqi relate it through Yahya b. Saʿid—from al-Qasim b. Muhammad—from ʿAbd Allah b. ʿAbd Allah with similar wording. The wording of al-Nasaʾi was cited earlier under “Sitting between the Two Prostrations.” Both he and al-Daraqutni record additional versions, and al-Daraqutni remarks, “All of them are sound.”
In its unrestricted form this narration constitutes evidence, yet another report from Ibn ʿUmar limits it to the first tashahhud of a four-rakʿah prayer or to the tashahhud of a two-rakʿah prayer. Malik, and through him al-Tahawi and al-Bayhaqi via Yahya b. Saʿid, relate that al-Qasim b. Muhammad demonstrated the posture of tashahhud: he set his right foot upright, folded his left, sat on his left hip without sitting on his foot, and then said, “ʿAbd Allah b. ʿAbd Allah b. ʿUmar showed me this and told me that his father used to do the same.”
This contradicts the earlier narration of al-Qasim b. Muhammad and that of his son ʿAbd al-Rahman; unless one assigns one set of reports to one tashahhud and the other set to the other, the two accounts clash. Al-Hafiz comments (2/243): “If the reports of al-Qasim and his son are applied to the first tashahhud, and his later narration to the …”
