Asl Sifat Salat al-NabiNasir al-Din al-Albani

al-Tahawi (1/152–153) and al-Bayhaqi (2/132). Its chain of transmission is sound, and I think it has already been cited elsewhere—see, for example, the discussion “Placing the Right Hand over the Left on the Chest” (p. 209). Al-Tahawi remarks: “The phrase ‘then he began supplicating’ shows that this was at the end of the prayer.” That is correct, but one must still ask whether the prayer consisted of two rakʿahs or four. In Sunan al-Nasaʾi (1/173) I have found another version that specifies: ‘When he sat after the two rakʿahs, he laid his left foot flat, kept the right foot upright, placed his right hand on his right thigh, and pointed with his finger while supplicating.’ Its isnad is also sound. This explicit wording confines iftirash to the first two rakʿahs, and it appears the prayer was a two-rakʿah prayer—most likely the Fajr prayer. Accordingly, the hadith furnishes no proof for the first school; rather, it supports the fourth view—the Hanbali position, which prescribes iftirash in the first tashahhud of a four-rakʿah prayer and in every tashahhud of a two-rakʿah prayer—and it constitutes evidence against the second and third schools. Third hadith: “The sunnah in prayer is that you keep your right foot upright and bend your left.” It was narrated by Malik (1/112–113) and, through him, by al-Bukhari (2/242–243) from ʿAbd al-Rahman b. al-Qasim, from ʿAbd Allah b. ʿAbd Allah b. ʿUmar, who reported that
