The Final Tashahhud
The Obligation of the Tashahhud
Once he ﷺ had completed the fourth rakʿah, he would sit for the final tashahhud.
In it he instructed what he had instructed during the first tashahhud and performed what he had done on that earlier occasion,
except that he “would sit in it with tawarruk (leaning posture)” (1): he would rest his left buttock on the ground (2), extend both feet out to one side (3), and “place the left leg beneath his thigh and shin” (4).
(1) It comes from the hadith of Abu Humayd al-Saidi and his companions in the wording: “When he reached the prostration after which the salam is given, he drew back his left leg and sat in the tawarruk posture on his left side.” The hadith was cited earlier under the heading “Ruku” (p. 605). Its chain of transmission is sound.
(2) “That refers to the area above the thigh.”
(3) This report is likewise from Abu Humayd. It was recorded by Abu Dawud (1/152) and al-Bayhaqi (2/128) through Ibn Lahiʿa → Yazid b. Abi Habib → Muhammad b. ʿAmr b. Halhala → Muhammad b. ʿAmr al-ʿAmiri → him. Ibn Lahiʿa is known for weak memory, yet al-Layth b. Saʿd corroborates him in al-Bayhaqi (2/102); thus the isnad is sound.
(4) From ʿAbd Allah b. al-Zubayr: “Whenever the Messenger of Allah ﷺ sat in prayer, he would place his left foot between his thigh and calf, …”
التشهد الأخير
وجوب التشهد
ثم كان ﷺ بعد أنْ يتم الركعة الرابعة يجلس للتشهد الأخير.
وكان يأمر فيه بما أمر به في الأول، ويصنع فيه ما كان يصنع في الأول؛
إلا أنه " كان يقعد فيه متوركاً " (١) ؛ يفضي بِوَرِكِه (٢) اليُسرى إلى الأرض،
وُيخْرِجُ قدميه من ناحية واحدة (٣) . و " يجعل اليسرى تحت فخذه وساقه " (٤) .
(١) هو من حديث أبي حُمَيد الساعدي ورفقائه بلفظ:
حتى إذا كانت السجدة التي فيها التسليم؛ أَخَّر رجله اليسرى، وقعد متوركاً على
شقه الأيسر.
وقد تقدم في (الركوع) [ص ٦٠٥] .
وسنده صحيح.
(٢) ﴿هي ما فوق الفخذ﴾ .
(٣) هو من حديث أبي حميد أيضاً.
أخرجه أبو داود (١/١٥٢) ، والبيهقي (٢/١٢٨) من طريق ابن لَهِيعة عن يزيد بن
أبي حَبِيب عن محمد بن عمرو بن حَلْحَلة عن محمد بن عمرو العامري عنه.
وابن لهيعة: سيئ الحفظ.
لكن قد تابعه الليث بن سعد: عند البيهقي (٢/١٠٢) .
فالإسناد صحيح.
(٤) هو من حديث عبد الله بن الزبير قال:
كان رسول الله ﷺ إذا قعد في الصلاة؛ جعل قدمه اليسرى بين فخذه وساقه،
