Blessed are You, our Lord, and Most High; [there is no escape from You except to You]. (1)
and, oddly enough, he writes only a few lines later: “The scholars are unanimous that Qadi Abu Tayyib was in error when he rejected the phrase ‘la yaʿizzu man ʿadayt’ (none whom You oppose enjoys honor); the wording is found in al-Bayhaqi’s narration. Allah knows best.”
(*) This extra sentence is taken from the printed edition of Sifat al-Salat; it is also cited by Ibn Mandah in al-Tawhid and by Abu Bakr al-Asbahani in his Fawaid, as will be shown below.
(1) The report comes from al-Hasan b. ʿAli himself, who said: “The Messenger of Allah ﷺ taught me some words to recite in the qunut of witr…,” and he mentioned them in full. It was recorded by Abu Dawud (1/225), al-Nasai (1/252), al-Tirmidhi (2/328), al-Darimi (1/373-374), Ibn Majah (1/358), Ibn Nasr (134), al-Hakim (3/172), al-Bayhaqi (2/209, 497), Ahmad (1/199) and al-Tabarani in al-Kabir, as well as by Ibn Abi Shaybah [2/95/6888], all through various chains from Burayd b. Abi Maryam, from Abu al-Hawra, from al-Hasan.
It is also related by Ibn Khuzaymah [(1/119/2)=2/151-152/1095-1096] and Ibn Hibban in their Sahihs, as noted in Nasb al-Raya (2/125) and Talkhis al-Habir (4/425). The additional wording appears in al-Bayhaqi and al-Tabarani.
The hadith is authentic, as al-Nawawi affirmed (3/496); every transmitter in its chain is trustworthy. Al-Hakim remained silent about it, while al-Tirmidhi merely remarked, “a hasan (sound) hadith,” which is insufficient. Ibn Hazm’s declaration of weakness in al-Muhalla (4/147-148) is disregarded, for he has neither precedent nor proof.
(*) Ibn Mandah also records it in al-Tawhid (70/2) with another good chain.
