and he taught al-Ḥasan ibn ʿAlī—may Allah be pleased with them both— to say [when he had finished his recitation in the witr prayer] (*):
“O Allah! Guide me among those You have guided, grant me well-being among those You have granted well-being, take me into Your care among those You have taken into Your care, bless for me what You have given, and protect me from the evil of what You have decreed; [for] (1) You decree, and none decrees over You. [And] (1) no one is humiliated whom You befriend, [nor is anyone honored whom You oppose] (2),”
(*) This extra phrase comes from the printed edition of “Sifat al-Salah.” Ibn Mandah cites it in “al-Tawhid” with a hasan (sound) chain of transmission, as will be shown shortly.
(1) Ibn Hajar states in “al-Talkhis” (3/426): “Some narrators omit the conjunction waw in the phrase, ‘wa-innahu la yadhillu …,’ and some insert the particle fa in the phrase, ‘fa-innaka taqdi ….’”
I add: Most transmitters retain both the waw and the fa. This is the wording found in the narrations of Ibn Abi Shaybah (1/6888; 29696), Ibn Khuzaymah (1095, 1096), al-Nasai, al-Tirmidhi, al-Darimi, al-Hakim, and Ahmad. Al-Nawawi ruled this version sound in “al-Majmuʿ” (3/495), saying: “The authentic hadith contains the fa and the waw; this is the wording in al-Tirmidhi’s narration and that of the majority of hadith scholars.” He further observed: “These expressions are often altered in the legal manuals; rely on what I have verified, for the wording of adhkar must be preserved exactly as transmitted from the Prophet ﷺ.”
(2) Ibn Hajar (3/432) also remarks: “This additional clause is firmly established in the hadith, but al-Nawawi stated in ‘al-Khulasa’ that al-Bayhaqi related it with a weak chain.” Ibn al-Rifʿah followed him in “al-Matlab,” saying: “This narration is not established.”
