from Tariq b. Shihab, who relates it from Ibn ‘Umar. It is the second hadith in the Musnad of Ibn ‘Umar.
This chain is sound; every transmitter is reliable.
Shabab—this is his nickname; his given name is Khalifah b. Khayyat—is ṣadūq and appears in al-Bukhari’s collection.
Sahl is Ibn Hammad al-Basri, also ṣadūq and cited by Muslim.
Hafs b. Sulayman al-Minqari al-Basri is unanimously rated trustworthy, and the remaining narrators are likewise well-known and reliable.
Al-Haythami erred when he wrote in Majmaʿ al-Zawaʾid (2/148): “Al-Tabarani transmitted it in al-Kabir, and in its chain is Hafs b. Sulayman al-Minqari—he is abandoned. The reports from Ahmad about him are conflicting; the correct view is that Ahmad deemed him weak.”
He confused Hafs b. Sulayman Abu Dawud al-Ghadari with Hafs b. Sulayman al-Minqari: the first is abandoned, as noted above, and scholarly consensus declares him weak—that is the narrator about whom Ahmad’s statements differed. Al-Minqari, by contrast, is unanimously considered reliable, and Ahmad’s opinion about him never varied. Ibn Hibban said: “This is not Hafs b. Sulayman al-Bazzar, Abu ‘Umar the Qur’an-reciter; that one is weak, whereas this one is dependable.”
The biographical scholars follow this distinction: Ibn Hajar writes in al-Taqrib that the former is “abandoned,” while the latter is “trustworthy.”
Al-Haythami also cites the hadith from Ibn ‘Umar in a marfuʿ form with the wording:
