al-Tabarani also transmitted it from Ibn Masud with a hasan chain, as indicated in Majmaʿ al-Zawaʾid (2/137). It is likewise found in the Musannaf of Ibn Abi Shaybah (2/97, no. 6910) with the wording reported by Alqamah: Ibn Masud and the Prophet’s Companions used to recite the qunut of witr before bowing. Its chain, too, is classed as hasan, as Ibn Hajar states in al-Dirayah (p. 115). As for the report recorded by al-Hakim (3/172) and, through him, by al-Bayhaqi (3/38–39) via al-Fadl b. Muhammad al-Shaʿrani—who said: “Abu Bakr ʿAbd al-Rahman b. ʿAbd al-Malik b. Shaybah al-Hizami related to us; Ibn Abi Fudayk narrated to us from Ismail b. Ibrahim b. ʿUqbah, from his uncle Musa b. ʿUqbah, from Hisham b. ʿUrwah, from his father, from ʿAishah, from al-Hasan b. ʿAli”—who said: “The Messenger of Allah ﷺ taught me, in my witr when I had raised my head and only the prostration remained, ‘Allahumma, guide me among those You have guided …’ ”—this chain is weak. Al-Hakim’s verdict that it is “authentic according to the criteria of the two Shaykhs” is mistaken—although Ahmad Muhammad Shakir agreed with him in his commentary on al-Muhalla (4/148); I cannot see how this escaped him. The flaw is evident for several reasons: First: Abu Bakr ʿAbd al-Rahman b. Shaybah is not cited by Muslim at all, and al-Bukhari mentions him only twice in corroborative capacity. Moreover, the critics criticised him. Abu Ahmad al-Hakim said: “He is not firm in their estimation.” Abu Bakr b. Abi Dawud said: “Weak.” Ibn Hibban, in al-Thiqat, said:
