(1) From the hadith of Ubayy ibn Kaʿb: “The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to pray witr and would recite the qunut (supplication) before bowing.” It is reported by al-Nasāʾī (1/248)—and in his al-Sunan al-Kubrā (fol. 218/1-2 = 1/448/1432 and 6/184/10570)—by Ibn Mājah (1/359), and by al-Ḍiyāʾ al-Maqdisī in al-Mukhtārah, through the chain: ʿAlī b. Maymūn → Makhlad b. Yazīd → Sufyān → Zubayd → Saʿīd b. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. Abzā → his father → Ubayy. This isnād is good; all its transmitters are those accepted by al-Bukhārī and Muslim except ʿAlī b. Maymūn, who is trustworthy, as stated in al-Taqrīb. It is further supported by Fitr b. Khalīfah and Misʿar b. Kidām, both from Zubayd. Al-Dāraqutnī (175) and al-Bayhaqī (3/40) recorded Fitr’s version, while al-Bayhaqī (3/40) recorded Misʿar’s; Abū Dāwūd cites both in muʿallaq form. With these corroborations, the tradition is authentic. There is another chain through Saʿīd b. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān, preserved by al-Dāraqutnī—and via him al-Bayhaqī (3/39): “ʿAbd Allāh b. Sulaymān b. al-Ashʿath related to us; al-Musayyab b. Wāḍiḥ related to us; ʿĪsā b. Yūnus, from Saʿīd b. Abī ʿArūbah, from Qatādah—Abū Bakr b. Sulaymān said: sometimes al-Musayyab would say ‘from Azrah’ (the copy of al-Dāraqutnī has the mistaken reading ‘ʿUrwah’), and sometimes he would omit it—from Saʿīd b. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. Abzā, conveying it.” This isnād is also sound. Ibn Naṣr (131) likewise recorded it: “Isḥāq told us, ʿĪsā b. Yūnus informed us,” but he omitted the wording:
