However, “he would not recite the qunūt in it unless he was supplicating for some people or invoking against others” (1); so he might say:
in the Dhuhr prayer, the late ‘Isha prayer, and the Fajr prayer; he would beseech Allah for the believers and invoke curses upon the unbelievers.
It is narrated by al-Bukhari (2/226), Muslim (2/135), Abu Dawud (1/227), al-Nasai (1/164), al-Daraqutni (no. 178), al-Bayhaqi (2/198), likewise al-Tahawi (1/142), and Ahmad (2/255, 337, 470) through the route of Abu Salama from him. Al-Hafiz comments: “The apparent wording indicates that the whole report is marfuʿ (ascribed to the Prophet).” I add: the preceding traditions corroborate it.
(1) This is the narration of Anas b. Malik. Al-Khatib al-Baghdadi records it in Kitab al-Qunut through Muhammad b. Abd Allah al-Ansari—Saʿid b. Abi ʿAruba—Qatada—from him. Al-Hafiz affirms the chain’s soundness in al-Diraya (p. 117) and Fath al-Bari (8/182), and he attributes it there (2/393) and in Talkhis (3/418, 438) to Ibn Khuzayma’s Sahih (1/78/2 = 1/314/620).
It is supported by a report from Abu Hurayra who said: “The Messenger of Allah would not perform qunut in Fajr unless he was supplicating for a people or against a people.” Ibn Hibban transmits it through Ibrahim b. Saʿd—al-Zuhri—Saʿid and Abu Salama—from him. Al-Hafiz states: “Its isnad is sound.” I note that al-Bukhari relates it with virtually the same chain, as cited at the beginning of this section (p. 954).
