It is also recorded by al-Daraqutni (no. 177), al-Bayhaqi (2/198), al-Tabarani, and al-Hazimi (p. 63) through the chain: Muhammad b. Anas – Mutarrif b. Tarif – Abu al-Jahm – al-Baraʾ. This isnad is sound (hasan); its transmitters, as al-Haythami states (2/138), are all trustworthy. Hence Ibn al-Qayyim’s verdict (1/102) that “it proves nothing” is unfounded, for he supplies no counter-evidence.
The report likewise appears in Muslim (2/137), Abu Dawud (1/227), al-Nasai (1/164), al-Tirmidhi (2/251)—who graded it sahih—al-Darimi (1/375), al-Tahawi (1/142), al-Bayhaqi (2/198), al-Tayalisi (no. 100), and Ahmad (4/280, 285) through another chain from al-Baraʾ with the wording: “He would perform qunut in the dawn (subh) and sunset (maghrib) prayers.” Ahmad comments: “No report says that the Prophet performed qunut in Maghrib except this hadith; and from Ali it is merely his own statement.” This ignores the hadith of Ibn Abbas—which Ahmad himself includes in the Musnad, as noted earlier.
Anas also relates: “Qunut was made in Maghrib and Fajr.” Al-Bukhari records it (2/227, 394), as do al-Tahawi (1/143) and al-Bayhaqi (2/199); Ibn Hajar was mistaken when he attributed it to Muslim.
Another report comes from Abu Hurayra, who declared: “By Allah, I shall show you the prayer of the Messenger of Allah,” and he would recite the qunut in the final rakʿa…
