Asl Sifat Salat al-NabiNasir al-Din al-Albani

and “He would recite the qunūt (supplication) in all five daily prayers.” (1) (2)

nor does it explicitly state that the incident took place at Uhud. Al-Bukhari’s decision to place the report under the Battle of Uhud apparently alludes to the version narrated by al-Bayhaqi, which does mention Uhud outright. Ibn Hajar notes in al-Diraya (p. 117): “This is corroborated by the hadith of Anas, which says that the verse was revealed on the Day of Uhud after the Prophet’s face had been wounded.” I add: al-Bukhari records the report in suspended form (7/292), while Muslim (5/179), al-Tirmidhi (2/166), al-Tahawi (1/289), and al-Tahawi again in Mushkil (1/236–237) supply continuous chains. In Fath al-Bari (8/183) Ibn Hajar reconciles it with the narration of Ibn ʿUmar: “The Prophet later cursed those men during the prayer, so the verse was revealed regarding both matters—the initial incident and the supplication that followed—and all of this occurred at Uhud.” (1) The report indicates that the sunnah for qunut al-nazila (the supplication during calamity) is to make the prayer in all five obligatory salat. This is the sound view in the Shafiʿi school, as stated in al-Majmuʿ (3/494, 505), and it is likewise affirmed by our Hanafi scholars, as cited by Shaykh Anwar al-Kashmiri in Faydh al-Bari (2/302). Al-Nawawi says: “As for prayers other than the prescribed ones, no qunut is performed in any of them.” (2) The same meaning is reported from Ibn ʿAbbas—the wording was quoted a little earlier (p. 959)—and it is supported by a hadith of al-Baraʾ b. ʿAzib: the Prophet would not perform any obligatory prayer without making qunut in it.
