Ibn Ishaq, as cited in al-Bidaya (4/72). From this one might assume that the Prophet did not perform qunut (the special supplication within the prayer) before that incident; yet the sources show otherwise. Al-Bayhaqi relates in al-Maʿrifa—quoted in Nasb al-Raya (2/129)—through ʿUmar b. Hamza, from Salim, from Ibn ʿUmar, that:
“On the day of Uhud the Messenger of Allah led the dawn prayer. When he raised his head from the second rakʿah he said: ‘Samiʿa Allahu liman hamidah. O Allah, curse Abu Sufyan, Safwan b. Umayya and al-Harith b. Hisham.’ Immediately the verse, ‘You have no part in the decision’ (Q 3:128), was revealed.”
From the same chain al-Tirmidhi also recorded the report (2/166, Bulaq ed.), but without mentioning the prayer; instead he adds at the end: “Allah accepted their repentance; they embraced Islam, and their Islam was excellent.” He graded the report hasan.
Al-Tirmidhi and al-Tahawi in Mushkil (1/236) transmitted it again through Ibn ʿAjlan, from Nafiʿ, from Ibn ʿUmar with similar wording, and graded it hasan sahih.
Al-Bukhari placed it under “The Battle of Uhud” in his Sahih (7/293); al-Tahawi and Ahmad (2/147) likewise relate it, through al-Zuhri, from Salim, from his father: he heard the Prophet, after rising from the bowing in the last rakʿah of the dawn prayer, say, “O Allah, curse So-and-so and So-and-so,” after pronouncing “Samiʿa Allahu liman hamidah, Rabbana wa laka al-hamd.” Then Allah revealed the verse, “You have no part in the decision… for they are indeed wrong-doers” (Q 3:128).
