Asl Sifat Salat al-NabiNasir al-Din al-Albani

…

It was also recorded by al-Tabarani in al-Saghir (p. —) (*) through the route of Ali ibn Saqr al-Sukkari al-Baghdadi, who said: “Affan ibn Muslim narrated to us; Sulayman ibn al-Mughira narrated to us from Thabit,” conveying the same sense but with the wording: “I myself saw the Messenger of Allah; whenever he prayed the dawn prayer he would raise his hands and invoke curses upon them.” Al-Bayhaqi cites this portion (2/211). Al-Nawawi (3/500) observes, “Its isnad is sahih or hasan,” while al-‘Iraqi, in Takhrij al-Ihya (1/159), rules that “its isnad is good.” The report indicates that raising the hands during the qunut (the supplication made in the prayer) is recommended. Al-Nawawi states in al-Majmu‘: “This is the correct opinion among our scholars.” I add: Imam Abu Yusuf, the disciple of Abu Hanifah, also followed this practice, as our jurists have noted. His biographers relate: “Ahmad ibn Abi Imran the jurist told me; Faraj, the client of Abu Yusuf, told me: I saw my master Abu Yusuf, when he entered the qunut of witr, raise his hands in supplication. Ibn Abi Imran added: Faraj was trustworthy.” This is cited in Sharh al-Hidayah (1/306). The same position is reported from Ahmad (and from Ishaq) in the Masāʾil of al-Marwazi (p. 23). The practice is likewise authentically established from the Commander of the Faithful ‘Umar ibn al-Khattab. Al-Bukhari in Rafʿ al-Yadayn (no. 23), Ibn Nasr (p. 134), and al-Bayhaqi (2/212) relate from Abu ‘Uthman al-Nahdi: “ʿUmar used to lead us in qunut during the dawn prayer and would raise his hands until his armpits became visible.” (*) Thus in the manuscript; in the printed edition it is at 1/324 (Islamic Office).
