and what is meant here is the sick person; for Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) reported:
“The Messenger of Allah ﷺ came out and saw some people praying while seated because of illness, so he said, ‘The prayer of the one who prays sitting is worth half the prayer of the one who prays standing.’” (1)
He ﷺ once visited a sick man and found him praying on a cushion; he removed it and threw it aside. The man then picked up a stick (2) to lean on for the prayer, so he took it and threw it away as well, saying, “Pray on the ground if you are able; but if not, then pray by gesturing, and make your prostration lower than your bowing.” (3)
(1) Recorded by Ibn Majah (1/370) and by Ahmad (3/214, 240) through several chains via Abd Allah b. Jaʿfar—Ismaʿil b. Muhammad b. Saʿd—from Anas b. Malik. The isnad is sound; all its transmitters are those cited by Muslim. A corroborating report comes from al-Zuhri, from Abd Allah b. ʿAmr, with similar wording, adding that their prayer was subha (a voluntary prayer); the chain is interrupted, however, because al-Zuhri did not meet Ibn ʿAmr. Imam Muhammad also related it (no. 112): “Malik informed us, al-Zuhri narrated…,” and it appears in Malik’s Muwatta (1/156–157).
(2) That is, a piece of wood. Lisan al-Arab states: “al-ʿud: any slender stick; others say: a piece of wood from any tree, whether thin or thick.” The hadith supports the second definition, for the first is unlikely.
(3) Reported by al-Bayhaqi in al-Sunan (2/306) and in al-Maʿrifah—as quoted in Nasb al-Rayah (2/175) and elsewhere—and by al-Bazzar in his Musnad, through Abu Bakr al-Hanafi and Abd al-Wahhab b. ʿAta, who both said: Sufyan al-Thawri narrated to us, from Abuʾl-Zubayr, from Jabir b. Abd Allah, with this wording.
