However, a different report from him gives the opposite picture. Muadh b. Najdah said: “Kamil b. Talhah narrated to us; Hammad – that is, Ibn Salamah – narrated from al-Azraq b. Qays, who said: ‘I saw Ibn ʿUmar, when he rose after the two rakʿahs, place his hand on the ground for support. I asked his son and those sitting with him, ‘Perhaps he does this only because of old age?’ They replied, ‘No; but this (1) is how it is done.’”
Al-Bayhaqi related it (2/135).
The chain is good; all its transmitters are reliable except Muadh b. Najdah. Al-Hafiz said in Lisan (following his source, al-Mizan): “His hadith is acceptable, though he has been subject to some criticism.”
Al-Bayhaqi also said: “We have likewise narrated from Nafiʿ that Ibn ʿUmar would lean on his hands when he rose. The same practice was observed by al-Hasan and a number of the tabiʿin.”
Al-Nawawi wrote in al-Majmuʿ (3/444): “This is our position. Ibn al-Mundhir transmitted it from Ibn ʿUmar, Mak-hul, ʿUmar b. ʿAbd al-ʿAziz, al-Qasim b. ʿAbd al-Rahman, Malik, and Ahmad.”
I add: It is also the explicit wording of Imam al-Shafiʿi in al-Umm (1/101). After citing the hadith of Malik b. al-Huwairith he said: “We act upon this, and we instruct anyone who rises from prostration or from sitting in the prayer to support himself on both hands, following the sunnah; for that is more in keeping with humility, more helpful to the worshipper, and less likely to make him lose balance. Any other way of rising I deem disliked.”
I add: The hadith of Ibn al-Huwairith is in fact more specific than al-Shafiʿi’s general statement; it appears that he extended the ruling by analogy with the form of rising mentioned in that report, as al-Bayhaqi’s treatment of the matter suggests.
(1) Thus in the manuscript; perhaps the correct wording is: “in this way,” or something similar.
