Asl Sifat Salat al-NabiNasir al-Din al-Albani

Standing for the third, then the fourth rakʿah

Then the Prophet ﷺ would rise to the third rakʿah, pronouncing the takbir (1)

(1) Reported by al-Bukhari and Muslim; it was previously documented under the narration of Abu Hurayrah (p. 674). Concerning how the Prophet ﷺ rose after the two-rakʿah sitting—whether he leaned on his hands or on the fronts of his feet—no sound hadith is known, except for Abu Hurayrah’s report: “The Prophet would rise in prayer on the fronts of his feet.” Although its wording is general enough to include this situation, its chain is weak, as noted earlier. It is also partially contradicted by the authentic hadith of Malik b. al-Huwairith: “When the Prophet ﷺ lifted his head from the first or third prostration in which he did not sit, he sat upright and then stood,” an authenticated narration already cited (p. 817). What is confirmed is the practice of Ibn Masʿud. ʿAbd al-Rahman b. Yazid said: “I observed ʿAbd Allah b. Masʿud in prayer; he rose without sitting, standing on the fronts of his feet in the first and third rakʿah (unit of prayer).” Al-Tabarani related this in al-Kabir, and al-Bayhaqi (2/125–126) through the route of Sufyan b. ʿUyaynah from ʿAbdah b. Abi Lubabah. The chain is sound, and al-Bayhaqi declared it so. He also transmitted the same practice through additional chains from Ibn Yazid, and from Ibn ʿUmar—that he too would stand on the fronts of his feet—and those chains are likewise sound.
